Although it is controversial for many parents, babies are not born with a skill to fall asleep on their own. They want to be and must be assisted in the beginning. They are learning to self-settle and go to sleep like many other things. Babies have onset sleep association. What does it mean? They relate particular environment and conditions with falling asleep. For example: if baby falls asleep being rocked, then rocking is a signal for him. He would think “ok. I am rocked, I can be calm and go to sleep”. It is our task to create healthy sleep associations which will help baby to fall asleep and get back to sleep after awakings between sleep cycles which are naturally occurring.
